Planetary Boundaries Initiative Briefing on Amendments to 22 May Zero Draft

On 29 May 2012 the Planetary Boundaries Initiative published its amendments to the Zero Draft of 22 May 2012. Concerned at the lack of recognition in the Zero Draft for planetary boundaries or earth system processes, P.B.I. calls for  changes to the text to include, inter alia, the provision of a new specialised institutional body at supra national level that is focused on reviewing the state of the planet and the earth’s carrying capacity.

This briefing is intended as an advocacy tool representing our views on the draft Outcome document currently being discussed in New York between 29 May 2012 – 2 June 2012 (last period for preparatory meetings prior to the Rio Conference) – the briefing contains specific drafting amendments to the 22nd May 2012 Co-Chair’s Suggested Text, in particular to paragraphs 77 and 85, and some of the Sustainable Development Goals text.

These 5 days are additional to the original timetable to allow further deliberations between representatives of governments. It may be that many are already in New York and this comes too late to now get sign on – but you are welcome to do so if you wish using the form below or by emailing us at info@planetaryboundariesinitiative.org. Otherwise and as well, it would be great if anyone attending New York from the thematic cluster wished and was able to advocate for changes to the text on behalf of the planetary boundaries concept.

The following organisations have signed onto the briefing –

• Thematic facilitator – Peter Roderick
• Rob Wheeler and the Global Ecovillage Network
• EcoEarth Alliance UN Partnership Initiative
• World Transforming Initiative
